We had a great turnout! Thank you to every one who participated.

Modern Gas recently had the honor of hosting an event in support of fighting against Alzheimer’s. The event was held to bring awareness to the disease, as well as bring in many donations. These gifts not only support the patients and families suffering, but help to advance research on the disease, in hopes of someday coming up with a cure. Keep reading to learn more about Alzheimer’s and how Modern Gas has proudly taken a role in fighting against it.

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that most commonly occurs in people over the age of 65. It tends to get worse as time passes, making it nearly impossible for those affected to remember life events and carry on normal conversations. It affects a person’s ability to function normally throughout each day, as it is known for causing disorientation, confusion, and serious mood swings. It is a truly devastating disease affecting not only those diagnosed, but their families as well.

Modern Gas Company’s Role

Because this disease can be extremely damaging to a family’s morale, Modern Gas decided to host a Walk event in hopes of assisting in the elimination of it. This event drew out over 200 people from the community who all worked together to help bring an end to Alzheimer’s. To participate in the event, participants were encouraged to raise at least $200 to walk the two-mile trail and receive a t-shirt. One walker alone was able to raise over $2,600 for this cause! The walk not only raised funds in support of those suffering, but offered a symbol of strength, saying that this community can keep moving forward and fighting back, in spite of this disease.

Various colors were spread throughout the Walk event to symbolize the hardships those affected have had to go through and the triumphs people have overcome in spite of the disease. Orange flowers were worn by many to show general support and represent the idea of life without the disease. Additionally, purple was worn by those who had lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s, yellow was worn by those who are currently helping someone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and blue was worn by those personally suffering from the disease.

But the Walk event was not the only big news. The event also hosted many bands, as well as a cook-off for grillers throughout the community. At the start of the event, over $70,000 had already been raised for Alzheimer’s awareness and medical research. On top of that, Mark Holloway, president of Modern Gas, announced an additional surprise donation of $4,000 on behalf of the company.

Modern Gas recognizes the importance of giving back to the community and was proud to host such a meaningful and beneficial event. Visit here to learn more about Alzheimer’s and what can be done to fight against it. You can read more about this event on the Albany Herald.
